Mariangel– I think that the dancers are the moving picture of this amazing piece of art. How do you think the dancers contribute to the general ambiance of the night? Since Katrina a lot of “Salseros/as” relocated to other states and cities, so the scene suffered a bit. In its former glory, (Red Room) every Wednesday night would have a grand turnout for sizzling live music and hot salsa dancing. I would like an environment where all races can unite and enjoy the beautiful sound of the congas and dance to the beat of the clave.ĭerik– I want Eiffel to exceed its amazing reputation of being the premiere venue in New Orleans to catch a glimpse of Latin culture/couture. A night in which people can say that they are entering into a place where they can have an amazing Latin experience. Mariangel– I would love to help create a night of classic, grown and sexy Latin music that can take you on a field trip of culture and happiness. What is your hope/goal for the new Latin Nights at the Eiffel Society? I am originally from Maracaibo, Venezuela.ģ. Are you from New Orleans? If not, where are you from? Everyone was far better than I was that night…lol! Afterward, I asked him to teach me everything he could. I danced one song and watched in amazement for the rest of the night. The first night there he took me to a local club with a live band playing and a sea of dancers on the dance floor. I couldn’t understand his enthusiasm and excitement so I decided to take a trip to Arizona and find out what salsa was. However, I loved the vibe and atmosphere of the scene so much that I immediately fell in love with it.ĭerik– I got started about ten years ago when a good friend of mine mentioned he was learning, dancing, and teaching “salsa” in Arizona. We sat at the bar all night and did not dance! I was so embarrassed that, being Hispanic, I couldn’t do all those amazing, sexy moves that the other dancers were doing.

Mariangel- I got interested in salsa dancing back in 2001 when I reunited with a friend from high school who invited me to take a class at the Red Room on a Wednesday night. Can you tell me a little bit about how you got started with salsa dancing? The seductive and innovative moves performed by the dancers caught my eye from the first time I visited the venue, and I decided to take a moment and talk to Derik D and Mariangel Mendoza from the house dance company, Liquid Rhythm, to get to know the group that makes the Latin Night at Eiffel so energetic and fun to watch.ġ. The components of great live music, talented dancers and a beautiful venue are the makings of an unforgettable night of salsa in New Orleans.įor a fun, healthy and energizing midweek activity, the Eiffel Society and its beautiful dancers are a must-have. They begin the night with salsa classes from 7:00-8:00pm followed by a live band from 8:00-11:00pm. The Eiffel Society hosts such a night on Wednesday, and part of the allure of this night is the salsa dancers. Part of the greatness of a city like New Orleans is the way in which many different cultures make up our community.
